Frequently asked questions.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling and psychotherapy are both forms of talking therapy that can help people manage and cope with their mental health and emotional wellbeing. The main difference between counselling and psychotherapy is the length of time each is typically undertaken. Counselling is usually short-term and focuses on a specific issue or problem, while psychotherapy usually involves longer-term therapy and delves deeper into the underlying issues and causes of the problem. Both counselling and psychotherapy use a range of techniques to help people understand and manage their thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

What should I expect from a session?
Each counselling session will vary depending on the individual’s needs and the counsellor’s approach. Generally, a session will involve talking about the issue(s) the individual wants to address and exploring thoughts, feelings, and behaviours related to it. The counsellor may also provide guidance and use a range of techniques to help the individual manage their issue(s).
How long does counselling take?
The length of counselling will depend on the individual’s needs and the frequency of the sessions. Generally, counselling sessions are held regularly, between once a week and once a month, for a period of time. Some people find that a few sessions are enough to help them manage their issue(s) while others may need more ongoing support.
